Water IndustryWhat Is BPA?BPA or Bisphenol A is a chemical that is the building block of many hard clear plastics today including baby bottles, the lineing of cans and the large water water cooler jugs that so many of us drink from. It is a powerful chemical that acts as a synthetic estrogen used to harden polycarbonate plastics and in the epoxy resin used can linings. It was found in the bodies of 93 percent of the Americans tested by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) The chemical was discovered in the 1930's and used as estrogenic drug. Currently the FDA maintains that low dose to BPA is harmless. These findings are based on 2 studies that were funded by the same company that produces and makes a profit from the chemical BPA. meanwhile over 200 independent peer-reviewed studies have scientist worried about our exposure to BPA. In laboratory tests, trace BPA exposure has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system. The endocrine system influences almost every cell, organ, and function of our bodies, and is instrumental in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, and sexual function and reproductive processes. Disruption of the endocrine system triggers a wide variety of disorders, including chromosomal and reproductive system abnormalities, cancer, cardiovascular system damage, adult-onset diabetes, obesity and resistance to chemotherapy. Even after endless tests proving this chemicals dangers to humans the FDA still has not outlawed it, therefore many companies today continue to use it in their products. When this chemical gets heated it is released out of the plastic and could leak into your water or food. Try your best to avoid eating or drinking anything that comes from a plastic bottle. Glass is always the better option. |
